2008 was probably the most successful year in the history of Sliabh Liag A.C. Athletes from the club competed with distinction at all levels from local to International. Added to the successes in prominent competition the large numbers who continue to make the effort to train regularly is highly encouraging and can only lead to more success in the future.

The success of the club is based on a lot of hard work done by many people. From those who coach and assist at training to those who arrange transport and accommodation, those who look after finance, raise money, order gear and equipment, apply for grants, fill out registrations, send club notes to newspapers and the many people who give their time to travel to competitions. All are making a valued contribution to the success of the club.

In the course of 2008 there have been many notable successes. The following are some of the highlights. The list does not take account of most of the extensive medal winning performances as County and provincial level. To all athletes who lined out in competition throughout the year - well done!!

Track and Field Indoor

Scottish Indoors

A group of six athletes made the trip to the Scottish Indoors in February. Highlight of the trip was the bronze medal won by Darragh O Donnell in the under 17's boy's high jump with a jump of 1.83m.

Irish Indoors

Having qualified at Ulster Championships in the Odyssey Arena, Jordanstown and Magherafelt, Sliabh Liag athletes recorded their greatest ever success at the Irish Indoor Championships winning a total of 5 individual and one relay medals.

Once again Sliabh Liag had several athletes involved in County Donegal teams which competed in the Ulster finals. Sarah Donovan under 13's and Kelly Carr under 15's were both members of winning Donegal teams which progressed to Birmingham.

Cross Country

Declan Garvey was a member of Donegal Under 15 boy's team who finished 3rd in Irish B Championships at the Finn Valley Centre in Stranorlar in February. Recently two new names emerged as top class country athletes with Stephen Mc Intyre winning the County Under 17's title impressively and Ryan Mc Ginley who is still under 16 taking 5th in the same race.

Schools Competition

While competing with Carrick V. S. many Sliabh Liag athletes had great success this year. Early in the year the Carrick V. S. 1st year girls team won the County Donegal schools title. This is the first time ever that Carrick V. S. won an overall title in this competition. The best previous finishing position being 3rd.
At the Irish Schools Track and Field finals Carrick V. S. athletes won 3 medals, 2 Gold and a Bronze, all in High Jump. Gold went to Paul Donovan (Inter Boy's) and Ryan Byrne (Junior Boy's) while Darragh O Donnell took Bronze (Inter Boy's).

Coaching Development

The range of coaching skills within the club continues to improve. Recently a number of young athletes completed the athletics leader course, while 4 club members attended a one day workshop on core strength training.

With the many people currently helping with all aspects of club life 2009 promises to be an equally successful year.
