Well 2010-to 2011 was certainly a memorable one for the
Sliabh Liag Athletic Club. Firstly, we
would like to take the opportunity to thank parents, coaches, teachers,
committee members and helpers. Without your time and dedication, none of this
would be possible. And of course not to
mention the athletes, who always gave their best, whether attending training,
going to competitions and in general making this a great year in our club.
We started off last November when Barry Quigg was the
recipient of an Ulster Star Award. He
has been very dedicated to his sport and it is great to see his accomplishments
being recognised by the awarding body.
Also in November we held a Registration night and registered
41 athletes. We also decided to change
from tracksuits to hoodies. This has been a tremendous success, as well
as being financially viable. The club
hoodies are black with the club logo, as well as their names on the sleeve, which
makes it easier to identify if any are lost.
In January, Dominic Gallagher attended the Boy’s U15 Cross
Country running 3500m. There were 90
participants in this event and we were delighted when Ulster placed first.
16 more of our athletes, then travelled to
the Sportshall Trials which were held in The Abbey Vocational School, Donegal
Town. The selected athletes represent
Donegal and if successful, go on to compete at the Aviva Stadium in Birmingham,
later on in the year. Four of our
athletes from our small club were chosen, Shannon Bonner, John Gibbons, Niamh
Gavigan and Eoin O Leime. They each won
their regional competitions and went onto Birmingham were they did extremely
well, competing against the rest of Britain. In the U13 Boy’s, Donegal came 12th
with 709 points. In the U13 Girl’s,
Donegal came 9th with 934 points.
In the U15 Boy’s, Donegal came 8th with 895 points and
finally in the U15 Girl’s Donegal were just pipped to the post by Berkshire
with a grand total of 1245 points, the winners scoring only 22 points
more.
Also in January, at the Woodies
DIY Juvenile Indoor Combined Events Championships of Ireland in Nenagh, Barry
Quigg became a silver medalist as well as setting a new PB OF 1.90m. Later in the month, Barry Quigg and Sarah Donovan were nominated by their club and received a Co Board Award at the Finn Valley Centre, in recognition of their achievements.
February, the club held their first club competition with 21
athletes partaking in Shot Put, Standing Long Jump, High Jump, 60m and
600m. 5 points were awarded to best
jump, throw etc, 3 points to 2nd , 2 points to 3rd and 1
point for everyone else. It was a very
successful competition and Eoin O Leime and Susan O Donoghue were the overall
winners for the boys and girls sections.
We then travelled to Tir Chonnil A.C. who ran a pre-competition, for all
athletes who would soon be competing at competition level. Jason Mc Gill won medals in 3 events, Denis
Byrne was first in Shot as was Ryan Byrne.
Aisling Dohety also came home with a third place title in Shot Put for
her age group. At this competition
Barry Quigg recorded a new PB of 1.91m, breaking the club record previously
held by Paul Donovan. Fortunately, we
had an amateur videographer with us and he caught it all on tape. It can be viewed on our facebook page. It was a very well organised competition and
the club extends its thanks to all in Tir Chonnail, who organised the event.
Then to the Odyssey Arena for the Irish
Indoor Championships. 14 from the club
attended and were delighted when John Gibbons brought back a Gold medal in Shot
in the U13 age group. Mollie went on to
take Bronze in the U15 Girl’s Shot Put and was presented with her medal by
former Olympian Mary Peters, who won an Olympic medal at the 1972 Munich
games.
In March, Colette Byrne, Siun Donovan and Tania Byrne
attended a Child Protection Course in Glencolmcille. They have all received their certificates since.
Also in March at the Northern Ireland and
Ulster Juvenile Championships (Round 2) in Magherafelt, Barry Quigg, Ryan Byrne
and Sheena Quigg all competed to qualify for the All Ireland Championships in
Nenagh. Barry competed in 4 events and
qualified in 3, Ryan competed in 3 and qualified in 3 and Sheena competed in
the 200m and qualified as well. Then
onto Nenagh where Barry Quigg gained his first Gold All Ireland medal, with a
jump of 1.90m. Ryan Byrne and Sheena
Quigg as well as the relay team which also involved Sheena, Sarah Donovan,
Nuala Byrne and Aisling Doherty all competed in this tough competition and
although no medals were won, they were delighted for Barry who brought back a
Gold, as well as recognition for the club.
April saw Veronica Mc Ginley and Tania Byrne attend an
Assistant Club Coaching Course in Annagry over 2 weeks, one evening per
week. They also have completed the
course and received their certificates.
Barry Quigg, also competed at High Jump at the Vocational Schools
Competition and won silver. Peadar
Conroy, Dominic Gallagaher, Shannon Bonner, Niamh Gavigan, Caoimhe Byrne, Susan
O Donoghue and Leanne Gillespie all attended the community games and all came
back to the club sporting medals, so well done to all of them.
June, July August and September saw many competition and
events. Mollie Donovan and Denis Byrne
both qualified for the All Ireland Championships in Tullamore on the 9th
of July. Molly was placed first and
Denis third, so a well worth achievement and progression for them. They both attended Tullamore at the Championships and Denis Byrne placed 6th
with a new PB of 11.39m with a 3.25kg shot.
Molly also had a good throw with 9.20m.
Tullamore again for the B Championships and Combined Events as well as
the big game, Donegal v Kildare. 5
Athletes participated in the Pentathlon event.
The 800m was the biggest fear, and some of the athletes found it all too
much. We finished our events and headed back to our B&B for a quick change
and race back to watch the game with our green and gold jerseys and flags in
tow. It will always be a memorable occasion for the athletes when the final
whistle was blown and our flags hit the roof.
A small lesson for them , practise brings rewards. At the B
Championships, we had a few injuries but nothing too serious. John Gibbons took silver in the B
Championships for the Shot putt, Shannon Bonner took silver on countback at the
High Jump, Caoimhe Byrne ran an excellent 800m and was awarded Bronze as well
as Peadar Conroy who went onto win Silver in his section for the Shot Put. The journey home was a good one.
Finally, in
September, registered athletes, coaches and committee members gathered for an evening
of appreciation at the Clock Tower in
Killybegs. We had a beautiful dinner, then made a small presentation to Barry
Quigg for all his achievements and hard work, as well as dedication to his
sporting life. All his fellow athletes wished him well on his new life in Galway.
The presentation was made by his coach Seamus Gallagher.
Overall, an excellent year for all of our athletes,
whether winning or improving, partaking or just being there for the enjoyment
of it all. We Look forward to seeing them all again next year. |
