Yes it’s that time of year again. Many of us will make New Year resolutions that will have a positive and healthy impact on our lives. Some will join the local gym, more may enrol with weight watchers while another group promise to eat a healthier diet and cut back on excesses.
In 2011, over 500 walkers, joggers and runners, made a New Year resolution and entered, prepared for and successfully completed the Cara Bundoran 10 mile challenge. On Saturday the 10th March 2012 the friendly south Donegal resort will again welcome thousands to an event that promises to be top mass participation/ ‘fit4life’ event of the year in the North West.
The cara bundoran 10 mile challenge organisers invite you to log into www.carabundoranrun.com and take that first step towards a New Year resolution. It’s a promise you will not regret

Club Competition
November 12th 2011

A beautiful sunny day saw Sliabh Liag athletes compete in a small club competitiion in Colaiste na Carraige. Events were high jump, long jump, shot put, 60. 300m and 600m. The competition was a good indicator of standards that would have to be reached, before 2nd+ students, would be able to compete at the Scottish Indoors. There will be another club competition over the Xmas holidays. Well done to all athletes and thanks to everyone, who helped in any way.

Sportshall Athletics will soon begin their trials to pick County Teams. These trials will be open for any child from 6th class to 3rd year students from Sliabh Liag Athletic Club. Dates will be announced soon.
1st - 5th year athletes will be aiming for the Ulster Track and Field at the Odyssey in February.
There will be a Club Competition at Colaiste na Carraige on Saturday 12th of November at 10am for those athletes ( 2nd year and over) who wish to compete at the Scottish Indoors, which will be held at the Kelvin Hall, Glasgow, Scotland on 3rd March 2012.There will be standards to achieve before announcement of qualifying athletes. This competition will be the start of this process. Among the events will be: 60m, 60m hurdles, Long Jump, High Jump, Shot Put, 800m, 300m, Triple Jump. We will need around 12 helpers for this, so any help will be much welcomed.
A Scotland Savings Scheme will begin the Thursday after competition which is 17th of November. The cost will be €10 per week, which should make it a lot easier than paying out a substantial amount of money, when the competiton is near. Anyone who does not reach the standard, will have their money refunded in full.
All monies have been now collected for club hoodies and will be ordered this weekend. However, if you would still like to purchase one, I will have the samples with me for one last night at the Thursday evening training session. Other than that, you will have to order them directly from All Sports in Donegal Town.
There are still a few registration forms not completed and returned to the school or club. We would appreciate these as soon as possible.
Training will continue on Monday 1st-5th year athletes from 4.15 - 5.30pm and Thursday from 7-8.30pm. There may possibly be another training session but this has not been totally decided yet. 6th class athletics will still take place every Monday from 6-7pm at Colaiste na Carraige. All first year athletes will join us after Xmas on a Thursday evening, This will help them prepare for up and coming competitions.
There may be a possibility of some fundraising this year as some equipment may need replacing.
Anyone dealing with children in a supervisory or coaching environment, must have a Garda Clearance Form completed. It is always a priority to keep our children safe. We also hope to run a Child Protection Course. If you are interested in this please contact the club or Collette Byrne or Tania Byrne. We will try and organise this, if enough interest is generated. We will also be sending out Garda Clearance forms to all parents and guardians of athletes registered in the club. These will have to be completed and returned to the appropriate body or returned to the athletic club, which will return them for you. We need this as parents will have to take their turn on the rota, which we hope to draw up soon, for attending merely in supervisory mode on trips away. Also, if you are interested in coaching, the Garda Clearance Form is an essential.
Coaches and helpers are always needed and if you or anyone you know may be interested in helping or becoming a coach, we would be delighted for you to come along and join us. We need at least 6 helpers on a Thursday night and presently there are only 3 on a full time basis. For the coach to help an athletes reach their full potential, they need to be able to spend a lot of time on instruction, this is why more helpers or coaches are needed. Please do come along if you can spare some time on Thursday evenings.
Next meeting will be Tuesday 15th of November at 8.30pm for committee members and people who are interested in coaching or helping.
Donegal Sports Partnership

Over
the past few years, Donegal Sports Partnership, has enabled Sliabh Liag
Athletic Club, and many other clubs I'm sure, to benefit from funding
to help, coaches, parents, students and club members to train to become
coaches or coaching assistants. Without this help, many of us, even
though we are enthusiastic, would still lack training. We would just
like to thank them for their continued help, which will hopefully see
our club benefit now and in the coming years.
